Program Features

Clinics focus on a particular technique or tactic each day; and include 45 minutes of on-court training followed by 45 minutes of match play to allow practice of the daily theme in actual play. Training sessions address such topics as:

  1. Common grips, stances and footwork for each contact move.
  2. Footwork and movement drills to improve court coverage.
  3. Practice progressions to reinforce important tactics and techniques.
  4. “Homework” to reinforce training.

This type of program has many advantages, not the least of which is how much I enjoy teaching in this format. Others include:

  • Semi-private or even private lessons at an already affordable group price — although I am rarely left to entertain the ball machine by myself (which is not a problem), there are often small groups or even a single player at clinics.
  • Flexibility to come to a clinic when it fits your schedule.
  • Continuity to your training: A multi-day approach allows us to reinforce training themes on a more frequent basis.

Juniors

Program Features

Our goal in the beginner classes is to prepare students to play tennis as soon as possible — first on a 36’, then on a 60’ court and finally on the 78′ court adults use. Students learn:

  • the basic strokes: forehand, backhand and serve;
  • the parts of the court; and,
  • the basic rules of tennis.

In addition to tennis specific training, classes include drills to develop students’ motor skills and general athleticism.

Each week there will be activities posted here on the website for parents to do with their children. Remember that the more your son or daughter does physically, the better they will do in class and the more likely they are to enjoy the sport. Likewise, they will enjoy tennis because it is an activity they share with you.

Students may need to complete this Intro class more than once before they are able to advance to an intermediate program (especially K-2nd Graders — who often need to attend several times). However, each time a student takes the course, we invariably see progress in motor skill development, the ability to focus and to concentrate as well as with their tennis specific skills. Also, because we use progressions, students who advance more quickly (or who have taken the class before) can try more difficult versions of our exercises and games until they are ready to take part in an intermediate program.

Students can get started with the sport either through the Kyrene After School Enrichment Program.

Program Features

For more serious players, the Kiwanis Junior Academy is a pathway that allows for a smooth transition from beginner to intermediate to advance training as the player develops. The Academy is a ROGY program using size appropriate racquets and courts as well as restricted flight balls to allow players of all ages to more quickly acquire the skills needed to actually play tennis. ROGY is an acronym for the balls that players use as they age and develop the skills necessary to compete at higher levels.

Younger players (≈ ages 6-8) and first time older players start with the larger Red Ball (approximately 25% of the bounce of the Yellow Ball adults use) on a 36 foot court. Older players (≈ ages 7-10) move to the Orange Ball (50% of the bounce of the Yellow Ball) on a 60’ court. Next (≈ ages 10-12) players progress to the Green Dot Ball (75% of Yellow Ball bounce) on the full 78’ court; and, finally, at approximately age 12-13, players move to the Yellow Ball.

The Academy program is offered Monday-Thursday in the late afternoon, early evening as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings.

By registering with ATAAZ, you pay the same price but help us keep our Technical Focus Groups more affordable for the kids who go on to the next level of involvement in the sport.

Program Features

For players who want to play high school tennis or get a Southwest Section ranking by participating in sanctioned USTA tournaments, we recommend Technical Focus Groups and/ or private/semi-private lessons in addition to the Academy program.

These lessons focus upon technical and tactical issues that players must master to effectively compete. Players learn progressions for working on their strokes, drill on specific tactical situations and responses then are given the opportunity to practice these elements in a live ball scenario.

A couple of times a year, we attempt to video players either in a competitive environment or on the ball machine to allow them to see what elements of their game are improving and which need work. These super slow motion videos (300 fps) are posted to Youtube for the player to review as they practice. In addition, we provide similar video of professional players, which our players can model.

We work with players with Orange, Green Dot and Yellow balls to assist them with transitioning smoothly from one court to the next; and to ensure that they are mastering the appropriate skills on each court before they move entirely.
